Cooking by the Seat of My Pants started in 2007 as a place to write down what we cooked for dinner. That's it. That was the whole pitch.
I'm Jerry. My wife is the actual cook in this house — she's the one with the instincts, the one who can taste a sauce and know exactly what it needs. I'm the one with the keyboard, so I get to be the one who writes everything down. We figured out pretty early on that if we didn't, we'd never be able to recreate the good ones.
The recipes here are all things we've actually eaten. None of it is theoretical. None of it has been tested in a development kitchen. Some of it works the first time. Some of it took five tries before we got the proportions right. The versions you see here are the ones that finally made it to the plate looking like food.
What you'll find here
- Comfort food — soups, stews, casseroles, the kind of thing you make when it's cold
- Weeknight dinners — fast, real, made from things you actually have
- BBQ and grilling — Jerry's territory, mostly
- Baking — bread, cookies, cakes when we're feeling ambitious
- The occasional ramble — usually about food, sometimes about the dog
What you won't find here
- Influencer photography
- Sponsored content masquerading as opinions
- 1,400-word essays about our childhoods before the recipe
- Foam
A note on the rebuild
This site has been rebuilt from the ground up to work properly on phones, load fast, and not get in the way of the recipes. The content is what it always was. The plumbing is just newer.
If you cook something and it works, we'd love to hear about it. If you cook something and it doesn't, we'd especially love to hear about it — drop us a line on the contact page.
